OUR LOGO

THE CIRCLE

Although a common theme in capoeira logos, the circle represents both the “circle of learning,” which is also evident in our ranking sequence… and represents the world.  However, the world is not the world as we know it; rather, it is PANGAEA, when all the continents were united as one land.

PANGAEA

It is a symbol of unity and solidarity.  Only Africa and South America are clearly outlined in the structure (with lines – that represent tectonic plates: as the inevitable forces that often drive us apart).  Although Capoeira is known as an Afro-Brazilian art form, it makes little sense to represent an entire continent and then a specific country.  Capoeira has roots in central Africa (Angola) – not all of Africa… instead of highlighting the regions (Angola and Brazil), we found it more appropriate to highlight the two continents from whence capoeira came.

ONDAS:

While the tectonic plates are forces that force(d) the continents apart, the ocean waves played an intricate role in the “shaping” of each continent.  Ondas is in the middle of the ocean where it belongs… and our goal is to help shape or communities…

The word “Ondas” itself is in a font that was once SOLID, but has been chipped over time – and will continue to chip away.  The chips represent two things: a) The scars from the trials and tribulations our group has endured, and b) the inevitable.  Much like Pangaea, Ondas will eventually devide and separate as Professsores and Contramestres/Mestrandos of the group establish their own identities and drift and settle in their own spaces.  Still, the pieces come from a clearly recognizable core.

COMPASS

Arrows pierce Ondas that are simulations of compass needles, clearly symbolic of direction.  The compass runs through Ondas because it is also what binds Ondas.   The arrows point NORTH and EAST.

-- The north arrow represents the 10 universal values/principles of our group. No matter how crazy things get, no matter what happens, we always know where “North” is… our moral compass will always guide us.

-- The east arrow represents moving forward…

COLORS

Black and White have been part of Ondas since its inception… They also play important roles in our ranking sequence.  Blue represents the embodiment of Ondas… and White represents the core of learning - always being a student.

NO BERIMBAUS, SILHOUETTES OF CAPOEIRA ETC…

We would like the art to be represented through THE PERSON – not the SHIRT or LOGO.  When we come together to represent our entire group at events and special activities, we will wear a logo that represents us all.

--- If you want someone to know you are a capoeirista (at a capoeira event) – then BE THE CAPOEIRA…  When we represent Ondas as musicians at an event – We will BE THE MUSICIANS… etc.  Placing any one thing in our logo would mean dismissing everything else we do.

Furthermore, there are NO instructor names on the logo.  The group belongs to the group.

MISSION STATEMENT

We are Grupo Ondas. We are students who embrace all cultures. Our main and ultimate goals are to help bridge the cultural gaps via the arts we practice and teach, and use said arts (particularly Capoeira) to teach the 10 Universal Values we believe all should share in order to grow as better people.  Our values will be reflected in our game and our being. Another goal of our group is to gain the reputation of positive, respectful, humble, open, non-discriminating people who are committed to the development, education, and integration of all cultures.
