- LYRICAL DANCE and HIP HOP: Lyrical Dance is a modern dance form which fuses modern dance, Jazz, and Ballet. Hip Hop is a dance that began in NY City in the early 70’s incorporating breakdancing and other styles of street-dancing. The lyrical dancers represent the mood, as well as the emotions the characters are experiencing.
- KEMPO KARATE: By definition it means mixture. It is a martial art that incorporates movements from both soft and harder forms of self-defense. Kempo is used in this presentation as a symbol of strategy and higher level fighting skills of the Portuguese at the time of African Captivity.
- WEST AFRICAN: The Music blends a number of sounds and styles of music, and similarly, the dance incorporates movements from several dances of West Africa (in particular Senegal). The dancers sets the mood for West Africa pre-slavery.
- BATUKU/KOLA SON DJON: Dance of the people. Lyrics often speak of historical and current affairs of Cape Verde. One of the oldest dances of CV that is a symbol of pride and strength of the people. The dance represents the broken spirit of the individual and strength in numbers.
- PASADA: A slow-paced, modern “umbigada” dance that originated in Ivory coast and now danced by Cape Verdeans and Angolans. The console.
- MACULELE: A Brazilian stick fighting dance created in honor of a village man who fought outnumbered to protect the people of his village without knowledge of combat. It is unclear whether the story is about a man who lived in Africa or Brazil. Maculele is used in this presentation as the symbol of slave rebellion.
- ACROBATICS
- CAPOEIRA ANGOLA: The oldest, most traditional form of Capoeira – believed to have roots in Angola and preserved by Pastinha in Brazil. The game of trickery and fun.
- CAPOEIRA CONTEMPORANIA: The modern style of Capoeira created by Mestre Bimba in the 1930’s (Bahia), known as the “beautiful game of Capoeira, where no touching or hitting is allowed. The Capoeirista demonstrates control of movements and attacks without hurting the partner.
